In 2016, on my 50th birthday, I decided to do something a little different. I plotted out a route that wrote out a big 5 and 0. I rode after work and the weather looked like it might cooperate (it had been raining off and on all day). When I completed that ride, I coined the term “Bicycalligraphy”!
I’m certainly not the first person to use a bike to “draw”. There’s a cyclist who’s been riding/drawing for a few years Victoria BC. Here’s his webpage. He’s even done some bicycalligraphy!
Here’s a video of the route I took back in 2016. Notice the pause in my ride on the east side of the ‘0’. I rode much of the ride in the pouring rain and it got a lot worse as I headed south to complete the ‘0’. I had to find shelter in the town of Heidelberg for about 10 minutes because thunder and lightning were crashing all around me.
For my 51st birthday in 2017, I mapped out a shorter route in the city of Waterloo and I spelled out “Fifty One”. See video below.
Who knows what I’ll do for my 52nd birthday in 2018?
Happy birthday Steve!! I’ve seen pictures of runners who have done this before too – have yet to try my hand at it but yours look great!!
