More on the Steaming Nostril 2017

My previous blog post was about the 2017 Steaming Nostril/Runny Nose event a few of days ago.  I don’t do a lot of racing, so when I do, these events tend to stick in my mind for a few days (maybe because my body is still reminding me of the effort).

Ride 44 – 2017 Steaming Nostril/Running Nose

I’ve been blogging a lot lately about this Ontario Spring Classic. The 2017 version didn’t disappoint as over 300 riders entered the fifth edition of this event.  In past years, there has been a wide variety of challenges in the Steaming Nostril and the shorter Runny Nose: slow, slushy trails, minus 20C wintery conditions, epic mud, strong winds… this race has had it all!

Rides 42 and 43: Joyride and Touring Toronto

Last year, I was planning to complete 50 memorable rides in the year I turned 50. A crash in September put that on hold, so I extended my goal to 2017. I’d finished 2016 with 41 of my 50 rides completed, and this past week, I added two more rides in the GTA. Continue reading

2017 Cycling Goals

January is month when a lot of people will set their goals for the rest of the year (Note: I’m avoiding the term “resolutions” on purpose).  My goals tend to be modest.  A year ago, my goal was to ride 50 memorable rides in the year I turned 50.  That didn’t quite work out after my crash in September, but I still completed 41 rides (I complete this quest this year, before I turn 51 in August).  I also wanted to ride 5000 km, which also didn’t happen due to a low-mileage autumn.

2016 Ride Summary

In the final days of 2016, I’ve pulled together a summary of my year in cycling.  There are countless resources available online, particularly for those of us who use Strava for our ride summaries.

Ride 41 – Fat bikes in the snow

Slowly I’m adding to my “50 in 50” rides for my 50th year.  I’ve accepted that I won’t get to 50 by the end of 2016, but today, I had a fantastic ride that will count as ride #41.  With the snow that’s been falling in the past few days, I thought I’d organize a slow fat bike ride in the snow around K-W.

Reflecting on 2016

There are still a few days left in 2016, but it’s the time of year when I
reflect on the past 12 months (and I’ve had a lot of time to reflect, given my slow recovery from a concussion).

Ride 40 – Solo Ride on New Fatbike and More on Bike Lanes

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve added to my quest for “50 memorable rides in my 50th year”.  With my crash and recovery from a concussion, I’ve decided to extend my 50-in-50 into 2017, but I was able to have memorable ride #40 this past weekend.  It was memorable for the sole reason that it was my first ride on a NEW BIKE!  And I used the opportunity to ride urban paths and trails and scout out a couple of the Highway 85 crossings that I blogged about previously. Ride 39 of 50: Share the Road – Greg’s Ride

Share the Road is a cycling advocacy group that is working to make Ontario more cycling-friendly.  As an avid cyclist, this is an organization that is near and dear to my heart.  Last year, with my three siblings, I rode 100 km in Halton Region to help raise money for this great cause.  This year, we were at it again, this time, with more family members participating!
